Le projet : Double Shelled Egg

“Le dépôt de l’Atelier de Moulage compte environ 5000 moules, stockés sur des étagères en bois. Le lieu évoque un squelette, un corps physique qui donne une structure à l’histoire de l’art. Les moules sont séduisants et suggestifs. Ils stimulent l’imagination quant aux pièces qu’ils contiennent.”

Le 18 septembre, deux équipes de tournage ont réalisé, sous la direction de Thomas Bakker, plusieurs films 16mm dans le dépôt de l’Atelier de Moulage qui seront ensuite intégrés dans des installations et des sculptures spatiales. Dans ces films, le dépôt fait office de moule et ses couloirs, de canaux de coulée. Ils seront ensuite sélectionnés et montés durant la résidence de l’artiste au CAB, du 24.10.2023 au 15.01.2024.

Fondation CAB

Le programme d’artiste en résidence de la Fondation CAB a pour but d’accueillir des artistes nationaux et internationaux, émergents et reconnus, pour une période jusqu’à deux mois consacrée au travail, à la recherche et/ou à la réflexion sur leur pratique, sans la pression de la production ou de la présentation. Nous invitons des artistes qui s’inscrivent dans la mission de la Fondation CAB, qui interprètent et questionnent les traditions du minimalisme et du conceptualisme avec une approche contemporaine.

Thomas Bakker expose ses nouvelles créations à l’Atelier de Moulage des MRAH les 14 et 15.12.2023 et au CAB le 13.01.2024.

L’artiste

Thomas Bakker est détenteur d’un Bachelor de l’AKV|St.Joost à Breda et d’un Master of Fine Arts du  Sandberg Institute à Amsterdam (2002), en Sculpture et Nouveaux Médias. Son œuvre a été exposée au Post CS/Stedelijk Museum à Amsterdan au Van Abbemuseum à Eindhoven, au Middelheimmuseum à Anvers, au Stedelijk Museum de Schiedam, au Centraal Museum d’Utrecht, à la Neue Galerie de Munich, aux Glasgow Sculpture Studios, au LOOP Video Art à Barcelone et lors de diverses initiatives et résidences artistiques aux Pays-Bas et ailleurs.

Thomas Bakker’s conceptual practice explores the way that ideas can be communicated through form, incorporating a diverse range of media including installation, sculpture, photography, film and text. Bakker employs strategies of exhibition making that are often site-specific, viewing exhibitions as a catalyst to produce a reservoir of possible meanings and discursive experiences. His poetic work derives its refined aesthetic from a wide range of influences including film, sculpture and literature. Visual or textual sources and ideas are often repeated across different bodies of work, an indication of his desire to keep ideas in play or to bring them back to life as raw material for future use.

“Strongly influenced by cinema and architecture my site-specific installations show constant research into narrative and space. Within these installations the projected image has an important role. It enables me to juxtapose, contradict and combine film, the ephemeral with sculpture, the physical, the absolute. I've always had this spatial desire. To build a choreography with objects combined with recordings of video and 16 mm. film. Within this approach the exhibition space plays a leading role. Through recording its architecture, I can (re)animate time and build a bridge between the moment of making and the moment of viewing the work. My cinematic installations and lens-based sculptures are always exhibited in natural light conditions so that the physical and the ephemeral remains in a precise balance. I prefer the spectator to lose themselves in a place, not necessarily departing from the cinematographic experience. In the movie theater you're supposed to forget where you are. I have this ambiguous desire… on the one hand I like to transport the viewer but on the other hand I don't want them to completely flee the scene.”
