David Serkoak and the Inuit drums

David Serkoak is born south-west of Arviat, Nunavut. From his birth to the 1960s, he experienced many hardships as his family, along with other Ahiarmiut, were repeatedly relocated by the federal government of Canada.

David studied to become a teacher and went on to hold a number of public offices. He also developed materials for teaching Inuktitut, an important Inuit language, at local, regional and federal levels.

David's talents are often sought after for regional, national and international events. He regularly offers drum dancing and drum making workshops across Canada and around the world. He took part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010.

David devotes much of his time to making Inuit drums and teaching the art of drum dance to young people.

He will be coming to the museum to share his perspective on the drums in our collections, and will be performing a drum dance session.
