Thérèse Malengreau - Au fil du marbre

Pianist Thérèse Malengreau presents a musical rite in three acts that interweaves works from the period of the creation of the relief The Human Passions with contemporary compositions.

The title of Jef Lambeaux's monumental sculpture also evokes the tumultuous reactions that have marked its creation, its chaotic position in the urban landscape and its imprint on the collective imagination over the course of a whole century. Calvaire de l'humanité/Calvary of Humanity  was the title initially given to the work. In harmony with the architecture of the pavilion which houses it – designed by Victor Horta as a classical tempietto – this relief invites the viewer to reflect upon finiteness and eternity.

“All that remains is history (...), marble dust”, wrote Marguerite Duras. But if we recall the words of Rimbaud and cross the threshold, the veins in the marble inspire us to scour the skies and probe the fearless horizon, while the stone itself silently listens to Man and to the infinite world. Temples used to close in times of war and reopen in times of peace. We can turn to music to open them once again, using Aragon’s cry: “Cease fire everywhere on man and nature”.
